WELLNESS TESTING & SEASONAL PROMOTION
Wellness tests are blood tests performed to ensure the health of your pet.  These blood tests allow us to anticipate any problems before your pet becomes clinically sick, in an attempt to modify the disease process and improve your pet's quality of life.  Pets are great at hiding disease and often by the time they look sick, it is more difficult to help them.  Wellness testing also establishes a baseline for your individual pet that can be used to monitor their health as they age.  Wellness blood tests are tailored for your individual pets age and known health status.

TICK PREVENTION IN MARCH!
During March, as the temperatures start to fluctuate over four degrees, ticks emerge looking for food sources. This is the time of year we recommend starting tick prevention if your pet is not on it throughout the year to prevent tick borne disease.
6 Tick-Borne Diseases You Should Know About
Ticks are more than just creepy; they can spread a number of different diseases that affect both pets and people. While important, no prevention is 100% effective 100% of the time. Learn the risks, then learn about the importance of annual testing.

DENTAL CARE AT HOME! PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT!
Vetradent makes dental care at home much easier with their line of products deigned to fight plaque and tartar, leaving your pet with fresher breath.
Two of our more popular products in this line are the dental wipes and the dental oral spray. The active ingredients with Biotrate Technology bind to minerals found within the dental biofilm on your pet's teeth. This removes the food source for the bacteria within the biofilm weakening the tartar.
The dental wipes can be used daily and may be easier than brushing due to a more tactile feeling of tooth and gum.
The dental spray can also be used twice daily (one spray on each side of the mouth) and has a nozzle designed not to startle pets when you spray. This is a very good option for pets that do not drink alot of water.

NATIONAL CAT HEALTH MONTH!
With February designated as National Cat Health Month, it?s the purrfect time for pet owners to focus on the health of their feline friends. Below are some tips to ensure your furry friend stays in tip-top shape.
Schedule your cat's annual health exam. The yearly checkup will allow us to catch any potential issues early, ensuring your pet stays in the best of health.
Keep your pet's vaccinations up to date. During the annual exam, we will review any necessary vaccinations to prevent your cat from contracting serious illnesses if exposed to other animals. Even indoor cats need the protection against disease.
Keep your cat's teeth healthy (great time to schedule this is right now as February is also Dental Health month). Your kitty`s regular teeth cleanings and exams are an essential component of their overall health. If not cared for, your cat may end up losing teeth, which can interfere with eating. Their teeth may also develop infections that can lead to many different health issues.
Feed your cat a high quality diet. To stay healthy, your cat needs a high-quality complete and balanced diet specifically formulated for felines. Make sure the food meets the nutritional requirements of your furry friend`s age and lifestyle.
Keep your kitty active. Keep your cat active to avoid obesity which can lead to many health issues including diabetes. Cats love to play, and it`s an enjoyable way to bond with your furry friend. An interactive feeder, engaging toys, or even a feline companion will keep your cat moving.
Pay attention to the litter box. One of the first places to look for early signs of illness is the litterbox. Look out for any changes in your cat`s litter habits. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, make sure to schedule a visit to our office as soon as possible.

A NOTE FROM DR. COX...
National Wildlife Day is February 22!
In honour of National Wildlife Day, I thought we could all reflect on the importance of wildlife as part of our ecosystem. Sadly, species are becoming extinct every day. The National Wildlife Centre works at the intersection of humans, animals, and the environment to protect ecosystems. It is estimated that Snowy owl populations have declined by 64% between 1970 and 2014. We are proud to be part of restoring the health and welfare to wild animals across Canada through our hands on training programs for veterinarians and providing surgery and medicine to help wild animals heal and be able to go back into the wild. We have seen many Snowy owls this year already - most with broken bones that need surgical repair. You can help wildlife too! Spring is coming and there are many ways you can get involved. You can plant more native plants in your gardens and remove invasive plants from your property. Think about installing bat boxes, and don't clean your gardens or rake too early so the pollinators have a chance to come alive and thrive under the old leaves - it's best to wait for the warmer weather to stay. Feel free to visit our website at www.nationalwildlifecentre.ca for more information and to get involved! Thank you for preserving Canada's wildlife!
